(WATCH) Two trains derailed outside of Frazee, Minnesota last week

This massive derailment involving two freight trains from Burlington Northern Santa Fe happened last Thursday about 3 miles from Frazee, Minnesota. In fact, I pass by this place several times during the summer months.

According to DL Online, last Thursday’s derailment involved 2 trains. One to the East and the other to the West. It looks like one of the trains ran the other off the tracks. There were several tank cars in the derailment, but they were heading west towards North Dakota, so they were likely empty.

This video was taken on a garage camera. In the video, you see the train start to leave the tracks, eventually causing the other train to derail. You can clearly hear the crunch of metal as the wagons pile on top of each other.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. There was a short evacuation of nearby homes and businesses as one of the trains was carrying some kind of fuel and lithium batteries. It turned out that there was no danger and the evacuation was called off.

BNSF crews cleared the lanes on Friday to keep a line open. It was unclear when the second lane would be cleared.

There is an urban legend about a train derailment right next to this place many years ago. A freight train derailed and entered Lake Acorn and was never found. Some of these lakes have a mud bottom and legend has it that this derailed train just sank, who knows how deep, into the mud bottom.
