For people trying to improve their health, weight is often used to judge their progress. Intermountain Healthcare Wellness Centers offer a bariatric surgery success program that goes beyond the scale with a host of comprehensive lifestyle assessments that give people more accurate insight into their overall health.

Using state-of-the-art fitness testing, caregivers can get accurate measurements of a person’s body composition and metabolic rate. Using this information, counselors, nutritionists, and exercise specialists develop a more personalized plan that meets people’s individual needs and goals. The expert team at LiVe Well Centers then work together to motivate, educate and inspire program participants.

Meagon Lewis, a general surgery physician assistant at Park City Hospital, used the LiVe Well Center program before and after having gastric bypass surgery to help her lose weight. She says the program was more than just a workout.

“The classes I took taught me a lot about what to eat, portion control, and the psychological reasons why we choose unhealthy foods,” Lewis said. “No one expects perfection, but knowing the information has helped me make better choices all around.”

Over the years, Lewis had tried several different diet plans and programs that never seemed to work long term. Before going to the LiVe Well center and having surgery, Lewis said she had difficulty moving around and underwent several back surgeries.

Over the past two years, she’s lost 150 pounds and gone from a size 22 to a size 8. She says it hasn’t always been easy.

“That’s what I love about the program is that it’s not about perfection, if you’re successful 90% of the time and you stumble, you just keep moving forward,” Lewis said. “While I started out just being able to walk for my exercises, now I enjoy hiking, kayaking and even creating my own gym at home.”

In addition to nutrition classes, Lewis says a major factor in her success was meeting exercise physiologist Nick Francis who works at Park City LiVe Well Center. He helped develop a training plan tailored to his needs and physical abilities.

“Not everyone starts out at the same level of fitness, and a variety of factors determine what your body can do without pain or worsening injuries,” Francis said. “We figure out which exercises a person can handle and as they progress we change things up as needed to achieve their goals.”
