How to lose visceral fat: Rooibos tea can help


The biggest distinction between subcutaneous and visceral fat is that the latter is invisible to the eye. This means that it cannot be pushed, nor can it be removed surgically. Diet and exercise are the backbone of all types of fat burning. But a drink can help reduce visceral fat by boosting fat metabolism and blocking the formation of new fat cells.

Rooibos tea, known for its distinct woody flavor, is traditionally made by fermenting the leaves of the flowering shrub Aspalathus linearis.

Research suggests that aspalathin – an active ingredient in tea leaves – helps reduce stress hormones that trigger hunger and fat storage.

Dr Tim Bond of the Tea Advisory Panel explained, “There is nothing like a healthy diet and a lot of movement when it comes to weight loss, but rooibos could provide additional support.

“Research has found that it contains a compound called aspalathin, which in lab studies has shown to reduce fat, increase fat metabolism, and block fat cell formation.

“Since rooibos is naturally sweet, little or no sugar or sweetener is needed, which makes for a delicious, calorie-free drink that will reduce the sweet tooth. “

The plant is also a rich source of antioxidants, which help regulate the metabolism of glutathione in the body.

A powerful antioxidant, glutathione has been shown to protect against inflammatory agents, toxins, free radicals, and pathogens.

Dr Hanél Sadi-Van Gijsen, from the division of medical physiology at Stellenbosch University, explained that inflammation and oxidative stress are two characteristics of dysfunctional fat.


They are also responsible for many diseases associated with obesity.

In a test-tube study, the results suggest that tea increases fat metabolism and helps block the formation of new fat cells.

The researchers noted, “Our data shows that the hot water soluble solids of fermented rooibos inhibit adipogenesis and affect fat cell metabolism, suggesting its potential to prevent obesity.

“Adipogenesis is the process by which fat-laden cells grow and accumulate as fatty tissue in various sites in the body. These cells develop as both subcutaneous fat and fatty deposits.

It has been suggested that drinking a cup or two of rooibos a day could help prevent dangerous belly fat from forming.

However, more human studies are needed to investigate the herbal effects of rooibos on weight loss.

Other researchers conducted in 2014 suggested that rooibos tea could potentially speed up fat burning by increasing leptin levels.

Leptin is the hormone that sends signals to the brain to help regulate food intake and help it determine when the body has consumed enough food.

How to lose visceral fat

Diet plays a central role in visceral fat loss, so complex carbohydrates and lean protein should replace white bread and refined grain pasta.

But alongside a good diet, one of the most effective measures to reduce visceral fat is to exercise regularly.

Harvard Health explains, “The starting point for controlling weight in general, and fighting belly fat in particular, is regular, moderate-intensity physical activity – at least 30 minutes a day to control and lose belly fat.

“Strength training can also help fight belly fat. “
