Get the tea on sick remedies


Something so simple can provide so much comfort during a time of discomfort.

The cold season is upon us and with everyone returning to school in person, the number of people feeling uncomfortable is increasing. With being sick comes the question of what will help me feel better faster? Drinking tea can be very helpful and beneficial when you are sick. Hot tea itself can help soothe and open your chest, but the type of tea is also important.

Peppermint tea

This tea helps with coughs and congestion. The menthol in peppermint leaves helps give the same relief as a cough lozenge, and also helps open your lungs and sinuses. Peppermint tea can also help reduce pain, inflammation, and aches.

Chamomile tea

This soothing blend helps you feel drowsy and has anti-inflammatory properties. This can be very helpful with illness, as trying to sleep while having a cold can be one of the hardest parts of being sick. Many of these teas contain lavender which also helps with sleep.

Ginger tea

Not only does ginger tea help with sore throat and relieve it, but ginger tea also helps to feel nauseous. Since ginger can be very strong, it can also help clear the sinuses and give a moment of relief. Many ginger teas are mixed with things like cinnamon or lemongrass, which are also useful for being under the weather.


A tea made from flowers that is best used when you experience impending illness. It has been found that this flower can help the immune system due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

Green tea

This tea already has a lot of benefits, but when it comes to illness, the antioxidants in tea help fight your body. An added benefit of green tea is that it comes in many different flavors like peppermint and ginger, giving you the boost of two teas in one.

Hibiscus tea

Another herbal flower based plant that is packed with antioxidants but also vitamin C and iron. This tea helps fight bacteria and in turn helps you overcome illness faster.

Adding honey to any of them will cause a soothing layer which can ease the irritation caused by the cough. Adding lemon to tea can also be beneficial as it contains vitamin C. Personally, I really like peppermint tea with lemon and honey. It sounds like a weird mix, but it works wonders and it’s a simpler version of the Starbucks medicine ball. Another choice for me is orange cinnamon tea which not only helps open up the breast with cinnamon and other spices, but orange helps balance those spices.
